Jesus - The Emptiness Cure

For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”  And they did so and had them all sit down. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.  And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces. (Luke 9:14-16 ESV)

Since the beginning of time, people have been looking for satisfaction and fulfillment.

We may try drugs, food, shopping, hobbies, etc., but deep down we know these will never fully satisfy.

We are told this in Scripture when we come to Jesus we can be filled to the full and overflowing.

Filled

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,  and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority (Colossians 2:9-10 ESV).

Let that sink in.

We are full, complete, made whole in Christ.

We may not feel like it all the time, but it’s true.

In the feeding of the 5000, Jesus uses language very similar to the Last Supper – the blessing, the breaking of the bread, the distribution, the peoples’ satisfaction, and overflow.

Then and now He is the bread of life which can truly fulfill our deepest needs.

He fills our “God hole”. Something everyone has that only He can truly fill. No earthly possession or habit will do.

By His death and resurrection, Jesus foreshadows He IS our everything.

His body would be broken into enough pieces to distribute salvation to all those who believed in Him as Savior simultaneously uniting us all as His bride, the Church.

Just like the loaves and fish, His provisions never end – there is always extra.

Endless Resources

God’s resources are endless!

He came to give us life and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows] (AMP).

There is always extra love, extra patience, extra forgiveness, extra grace, etc. to both fill us and flow through us to others.

Does this mean life will be easy?

Jesus told us we would have trials and tribulations in this life. We will have heartache, strife, sorrow, disappointment.

But He never tires of hearing our wants, needs, and requests. He never tires of comforting and loving us. Just read the Psalms!

He welcomes us with the open arms of a perfect, attentive, loving Father who delights in His children. He welcomes us at any time, day or night and gives us rest (Matthew 11:28).

The Truth

So the next time we feel lacking or less than – and people will try to tell us so, listen to Jesus.

He always tell us the truth about who we are in Him.

Jesus is so extra but He will never tell us we are.

How has Jesus been “extra” for you?
