Come Feast at His Table

Mindful eating.  It is being aware of what you are eating and why.  Many of us, myself included, can eat mindlessly – snacking without thought to nutrition or gauging our level of true hunger.

But there is another hunger: a spiritual one.

Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep,  and an idle person will suffer hunger. Proverbs 19:15 ESV

Do you know any spiritually hungry - or maybe even starving- people?  They seem so empty, lacking and without hope.  Just a shell.  People who are clearly missing something in their lives and trying to fill it with various things such as alcohol, drugs, sex, shopping, other people, etc.

Sometimes it can feel as if we are being sucked down a drain as those who feel empty people grasp desperately for any form of life.

Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger. Proverbs 19:15 ESV

The verse above may be about food, but there is an application to our spiritual lives as well.

If we are being lazy and slothful in our walk with God, we are going to be empty and spiritually hungry – sometimes without even realizing it.

Maybe like me, you have had to get “stuffed” on other things before you realized you were eating at the wrong table.

The solution to our hunger problem was vertical, not horizontal all along.

Just as physical eating requires planning, preparation, and effort, so does our spiritual relationship and walk with God.

Relationships require effort.  Try not talking to a friend or loved one for several days or months and see what happens.  The relationship dwindles and rightly so!

People and things were never meant to “fill us”, only God.  And if we keep trying to satisfy our spiritual hunger with things other than God, we will just keep running on empty, never being truly satisfied with the peace and contentment provided only from intimacy with our Creator.

He calls to us and waits for us.  He delights in us, sings over us, speaks well of us with the Son and the Spirit and longs for relationship with us (Matthew 11:28, Psalm 35:27, Zephaniah 3:17, Ephesians 1:3).

He’s our Best Friend, The Lover of our souls, The Mighty God, King of Kings, and Prince of Peace.

He offers us everything, we bring nothing.

That is the best offer we will ever have!

May we slow down, feast on His Word and drink from the river of His delights (Psalm 36:8-9).

He is our ultimate fulfillment.  We will never regret “overindulging” on Him.  And neither will those around us as we emerge from His presence with a peace and joy to share with a lost and desperate world.

So go ahead and splurge.  He has a feast waiting and has reserved a place for each of us at His table of immeasurable riches (Ephesians 2:6).

What is your favorite “food” in God’s feast?
