A Truth to Ponder Every Month Series - Part 2

Love

We think of February as the love month because of Valentine’s Day.  Again it comes shortly after Christmas when we celebrate love come down to earth.

In the English language, we can love a lot of things.  We love our spouse, chocolate, our dog, or a favorite song.

But the love God lavishes on us is on a whole other level – one we are incapable of comprehending (1 John 3:1).

The ultimate act of love was God sending His only Son Jesus to die for each of us.

Writing that one sentence was easy, but the whole world cannot contain the magnitude of this mindboggling truth.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him (John 3:16-17 ESV).

While we were still sinners, Christ died for each of us – for every single person who ever walked the earth (Romans 5:8).

We do not deserve God’s amazing gift of love in Jesus.  We are all sinners deserving the death penalty (Romans 6:23).

But God loved us too much to leave us in our self-created muck and mire.

His amazing love was there from the beginning.  He knew, even before He created mankind, we would sin and reject Him, yet still created us with a freewill - with the option to accept or reject His perfect love.

Why would we ever reject Him and His perfect love for the darkness of this world *sigh*?

He did this because it was His will and pleasure.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— (Ephesians 1:4-5 NIV).

Have you ever done anything for someone simply because it gave you pleasure?  It is a feeling like no other.  That is because we are walking in our Master’s footsteps.

When we give for the shear joy of giving, we express love from the purest form of our true selves as God’s children.

Don’t feel like giving, or are too tired, or numb?  Our feelings will follow our actions, not vice versa.  Plus, God gives us all we need for life and godliness.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. (2 Peter 1: 3-4 ESV).

We never need to worry about not having enough love, knowledge, or energy for joining God in His work.  While our resources are finite, His resources are endless.  He never grows tired or weary in loving, giving, kindness, forgiving, etc. (Isaiah 40:28).

This month, may we be open to receiving and giving love.

I have an invitation.  Instead of just loving our family and friends, would you join me this month in praying the Lord show us who He would like us to show some love?

I think we may be surprised!

I’ll be excited to hear who the Lord lays on our hearts and how we allowed the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit to bless others (Romans 5:5).
